If any of you read my post labelled !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! about a week ago, you'll know that our Odyssey has been making some pretty weird clattering noises lately. As the title says, it was thought to be valves since they are adjustable in the Odyssey. My dad took the car to the local Honda dealership today, and they told them there was no oil in the engine. Like, not even enough to detect. So we've gone for two-three months and several thousand miles in car with pretty much no oil. (Testament to Honda engines, yes...) What's disturbing is that there are no leaks on our driveway, no dripping lines on the car, and the indicator didn't come on even though its usually pretty sensitive. Worse, we got an oil change before it started clattering at another Honda dealership who didn't put in oil. Geez, this should go into that "Worst Dealership Experience Stories" post. But anyways so idk what the noise is (my dad won't tell me) but it seems we're looking at a repair of $1700, with possibly a new engine. My dad wants to make the other dealership pay for it (since technically they're the ones that didn't put in new oil) but I was thinking of another engine. There's a used NSX engine on SW Engines for $5995 (And only 68K miles!). Wouldn't that be fun? Anyways, any recommendations to what we should do? Crazy engine swaps anyone?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Update: Just realized that the dealer also washed the car, getting rid of several thousand miles and years of hard-earned grime :P

Stories like these are what keeps me doing my own oil changes (except for the one car that's still under factory maintenance). The lube techs at the dealers are no different than the kids at jiffy lube, etc. They are all just starting out as mechanics.

Lol you're dad won't tell you because he probably doesn't remember all the jargon he was hearing. Definitely pin this on the previous dealerships negligence but does that mean they drained the old oil and called it a day??

Yes, I definitely do, but the NSX engine would be more reliable and economical... :P

Titanium connecting rods are not economical if they go! Imo, a newer 300 hp engine out of an Accord would be pretty sweet.

Yea, good idea considering the new Odyssey and Accord no longer share powertrains...

Keep us updated on whether or not/when the other dealership pays for it. This would definitely qualify for one of those horrifying dealership experience stories. Have you talked with your insurance agent yet?
Not-so-crazy engine swap idea: Honda J37 swap? Probably swaps really easily. More power and more fuel efficient than J35s.

With literally no oil in there you should have had the low oil pressure light on the whole time. If you end up keeping the vehicle make sure the light in the dash as well as the actual sensor work or are replaced.

I had the same issue with my Nissan Sentra. Took it to a dealer by my house and they didn't put enough oil in it. Started making noise and when I took it to another dealer since I had moved, I found out it was low on oil. I knew there were no leaks and the dealer even confirmed that.

Idk but my dad found the transaction for the oil change so there's hope...anyways any ideas where to find a used J37? And if we did does the cooling/transmission need upgrading as well?

Yea, that's one of the major mysteries...
